More about this photograph: The location of this image is the former Traverse City State Hospital a.k.a The Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City, Michigan. Specifically this path is located to the right of the institutions upolstery and furniture shop, Building 61. The cement path is about all that is left of a patient garden of sorts. Used as therapy, patients maintained the small area and ground cover like myrtle still grow there every year, along with lilies of the valley and daffodils. During the 1950's, and possibly earlier, patients with "ground liberty" passes could stroll here with minimal supervision. As of September 2007, anyone can still visit the path although that may change as the site is being rapidly developed. This photo was taken in 1998.  This image appears in the book "Angels in the Architecture:  A Photographic Elegy to an American Asylum"  pg.160.
